Laptops For Class One Pupils: Is It A Dream Too Audacious To Be Achievable?

Kenya’s 4th president Uhuru Kenyatta is about to join the list of prominent world figures like John F. Kennedy, Jim Collins, Myles Munroe and John Kotter. Well, you may take that statement as an exaggeration but the fact is, Kenyatta’s promise to give all standard one pupils a laptop next year is not even anywhere near a “too audacious” plan.

I have read many stories of world leaders and success icons and one thing that comes out clearly is that these people dare dream what ordinary mortals would simply laugh at. Remember the American president John F. Kennedy? When he told America that they would send the first American to the moon before 10 years elapse, many people laughed at the idea. They thought that there were far too many other more “crucial” issues for the country, like the cold war, and that such an audacious plan was useless in the days. That was in 1961 and sure to Kennedy’s word, on the 20th of July 1969, Neil Armstrong walked on the surface of the moon.

John Kennedy’s dream did not only come true within the time he had said it will but it also did quite a lot in transforming the thinking of the American people. They became a country that believed in their abilities, something that brought about unmatched technological advancements and the pride the American people bare to this date. That is what I am seeing the laptop for class one pupils project doing to the Kenyan people.

Allow me to introduce you to the BHAGs concept; that is Big Hairy Audacious Goals. This is the one major secret that has put the achievements of individuals on the world map. Someone once said, “If your dream is not too big and weird that it scares you, it is not big enough.” Life would continue to be ordinary if we do not dare to dream and do extra-ordinary things. I am not blind to the fact that there are pupils learning from mad classes that more “windows” than is necessary, but I am more focused on the fact that if we aim at achieving the BIG DREAMS, the ordinary things will fall in place.

Go Mr. President, Go. Give our class one children the laptops. I can’t wait to see the transformation awaiting Kenya once this project is rolled out. I blame not anyone who thinks this dream is too big for Kenya; I know they will soon be smiling with us who believe in the Greatness of Kenya.
